Change To A Pretty Permalinks?

Posted by Edison on July 9, 2007

Hey, I’ve just change my permalinks from default to a “pretty” permalinks!

If you are not sure what is a “permalinks”, log in to your admin site, at the option tab you will see the permalinks.

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of weblog postings. A permalink is what another weblogger will use to refer to your article (or section), or how you might send a link to your story in an e-mail message. Especially when they are used to link to individual postings, once a story is posted, the URL to it should be permanent, and never change. Hence.. permalink. Got it?

But our blog’s permalinks will normally set to default. Which means your blog’s URL will looks like this: www.domainname.com/?p=123 this is the default permalinks. So what is a pretty permalink? Hehe, now you see: www.domainname.com/new_post_tittle

By changing the permalinks it might help the googlebot to know more on the topics that your blog are talking about. It helps to rank faster then a normal default permalinks.

Now, how to change it? Is pretty simple! Login to the admin site, go to option, click on the permalinks button, change the setting from default to custom.

You can use the structure tags to customize your “Pretty” or “Almost Pretty” permalinks.

%year%
The year of the post, four digits, for example 2004
%monthnum%
Month of the year, for example 05
%day%
Day of the month, for example 28
%hour%
Hour of the day, for example 15
%minute%
Minute of the hour, for example 43
%second%
Second of the minute, for example 33
%postname%
A sanitized version of the title of the post. So “This Is A Great Post!” becomes “this-is-a-great-post” in the URI (see note below)
%post_id%
The unique ID # of the post, for example 423
%category%
A sanitized version of the category name. Nested sub-categories appear as nested directories in the URI.
%author%
A sanitized version of the author name.

After changing the permalinks update the changes. Then at the bottom of the page you will get this message:

“If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.”

All you need to do is copy the text which is given then paste into your “.htaccess” file. If you have no idea where this file is, just go to your FTP open public_html, the .htaccess file is inside this folder. Download the file to your hard disk, open it with notepad then paste the text that you get from the bottom of your permalinks page and save the file. The last step is, upload this new .htaccess file to your server again.

And now, you’re done! Simple huh? Even a baby can do this ;)

Blogging Tips

Posted by Edison on July 4, 2007

1. Think about why you want to blog and what is it that you want people to read about. Focus on one topic and don’t go out of topic!
2. Keep it simple… Put pictures up in your posts… People prefer to look at nice pictures than to read all the long long stories…Also make sure the loading time is not too long.
4. You’ve got to offer something unique to keep them coming back for more! Eg a series of your travel photos, to a unique place like Seven Wonders of the World I mean I would like to see since I’ve not been there!
5. Yes you can make money by blogging but don’t overmonetize your blog. Don’t bombard your audience with too many paid postings.
